Minnesota 50501 is a grassroots movement dedicated to defending democracy, fighting against authoritarianism, and organizing for progressive change. We provide a space for activists to collaborate, share resources, and mobilize for direct action across Minnesota. PROTEST.
50501 began online as an expression of the people’s dissent against Donald Trump’s presidential administration. On February 5th, 2025, the first 50501 event took place at every state capitol in the United States. It wasn’t organized, wasn’t coordinated outside of sharing online resources and flyers. Yet people showed up. Over 200 people attended the first 50501 event in Minnesota, and thus MN50501 was born.

DISSENT.
Minnesota 50501 continues the proud Minnesotan tradition of anti-authoritarianism. In 1861, Minnesota was the first state to promise soldiers to President Lincoln to fight for the Union. Since then, we’ve always proven that the Minnesotan people take action when we find injustice. Minnesota has never voted for Donald Trump; we know that he is antithetical to America. But his administration has taken hold; and thus Minnesota will rise.

We host a richly diverse host of ideologies among our ranks. Anyone who opposes the Trump administration and stands with the people is welcome to attend our demonstrations. We pressure our legislators at every level to work to defend the American people at all costs against the Trump administration. We do this through thunderous demonstrations, organized economic movements, and more!

OUR VALUES
At its core, 50501 is a simple movement. We fight to preserve American democracy and to uphold the Constitution. We are anti-bigotry and pro-worker. We love our neighbors and hate fascists.
We believe in the power of a people to make lasting, positive change. Furthermore, we believe in the right of a people to rule themselves. That’s why the Founding Fathers created a trifold government — so that no one branch could muscle legislation into reality without consent of the other two. Checks and balances form the heart and soul of American government. If they erode, we are left with nothing less than the very system that George Washington’s revolutionaries broke us away from so many years ago. Monarchy is tyranny and America will never return to it.
We believe in unity among people. That means ALL people, not just those that the government recognizes. We believe that transgender people are just as valid as their cis-gendered counterparts. We believe that immigrants are human; that people of color in positions of power are not ‘DEI hires’, but strong leaders. The United States are only as united as their most disenfranchised demographic.
We believe in the Constitution. As our guiding legislative document, it holds unparalleled significance to the American people. Its beauty is not exactly just what is contained within; but the power of amendment. It is a living document; one which the American people must have the right to nurture and grow. It provides a guiding light to our nation, and has held strong throughout two hundred and fifty tumultuous years of our country’s life. It must be preserved in order for our country to prosper.
REMOVE.
We, the People, demand that the offending elected officials be removed from office. President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and all cabinet members appointed since January 20th, 2025 must resign or be impeached and removed by Congress. Furthermore, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) must be dissolved immediately, and all non-elected members removed from government.

We, the People, demand that all executive orders issued since January 20th, 2025 must be fully reversed. Furthermore, the unjust and brutally fired government employees removed by DOGE must be reinstated immediately. Finally, we demand that a recount of the 2024 Presidential Election is initiated immediately, to account for potential election security compromises akin to those examined by the Mueller Report.

We, the People, demand that American democracy is assembled. In Ancient Greek, ‘demo’ means people, and ‘cracy’ means rule. Democracy means that a country is ruled by the people, collectively. That is not currently the case. Billionaires are able to buy and sell elections freely. Thus, we demand that Citizens United must be overturned by amendment or court, following which campaign finance must be aggressively reformed.

It is only together that we might create the national change that we are fighting for. We are a group of concerned Minnesotans working to take action to protect our communities. We’re just like you — working-class, motivated, and passionate. We are working tirelessly to fight back. But we are not the only ones. There are numerous volunteers who are crucial to the movement, who are the lifeblood of our operations and the support that the demonstrations need to function properly. The organizers, too, are volunteers. This movement is not a salaried one — we fight because we can see that the world around us could be better. It is the fire of change that drives us; the flame of hope that galvanizes all attendees, all volunteers, and all organizers to action. This is why we do what we do. Because we can see a better world. We hope you can too.
